VIDEO: Billy Jack Goes To Washington

Most of you are familiar with the movie Billy Jack and its sequel The Trial Of Billy Jack which was listed as one of the Fifty WORST Movies of All Time. A few of the more astute among you even know that the Billy Jack character first appeared in a "prequel" called Born Losers. However, how many of you know that there was a movie called Billy Jack Goes To Washington? If you never heard of it, no wonder. It was set for release in late 1976 but after the first preview showing, it was put in the can for over 20 years when it was finally released as a video and DVD. Here is the trailer for Billy Jack Goes To Washington and just watching it you can see why the studio hid it from public view for so long. It is classic Billy Jack paranoia coupled with a lot of really BAD overacting. Highlights includes Billy Jack giving a karate chop to a senator's glass table and Tom Laughlin trying way too hard to sound like Jimmy Stewart in the Senate chamber scene. Judging from this trailer there is only ONE way to properly watch Billy Jack Goes To Washington and that is accompanying it with the DUFU treatment ala Mystery Science Theater 3000. So, Billy Jack, if you are reading this out there, I am begging you to re-release this flick along with some regular DUFUers such as myself, Charles Henrickson, and perhaps Paul Heinzman with the backs of our heads showing on the screen as we riff on the many campy Billy Jack scenes in this movie. Yes, you can convert this overbearing and overacted film which takes itself way too seriously into a campy comedy hit if you allow the experts to properly DUFU it.

Actually, that clip is kind of cool. What gives? Is PJ pissed that he can't get a film option on "Li'l Beaver Goes to Washington?"

You're kidding, right? This is the same leftist drivel they've been pimping since...probably before I was born. They're ALWAYS getting ready to "rise up" and "take back" their country, congress, shirts off the floor, etc. What they forget is that it isn't just "their" country. In fact, this country is more conservative than liberal. There's a reason gay marriage bills can't pass even in the most liberal of states and it's not because we can't read democrat-designed butterfly ballots. The hard left (i.e. the ideological Billy Jacks who think they're all the great saviors of socialis...uh, I mean democracy) is no more relevant than, well, Billy Jack. These movies are one long stereotype of how the left views everyone who thinks differently than they do. Maybe it's time to leave the 60's and 70's behind and join the rest of us. Just because you call yourselves "progressives" doesn't mean your dated ideas about peace, love, rainbows, and unicorns have any relevance to the 21st century.

Hey, DuFu;

Be fair, now.

In order for you to watch the Billy Jack movies correctly, you have to view them in the same context as the writers, director, producer and actors when they made them.

Smoke 40 bong-hits through a plexiglass Tokemaster, then snort a 6 inch long line of coke up each nostril.

Begin viewing.

it will all make sense.

And when you begin coming down, and get the doper paranoia, pop in a copy of the fine "Walking Tall" films, and imagine Joe Don Baker kicking in your door to whup up on your stoner ass with an axe-handle.

You people seem a bit confused about Billy Jack. He was a Green Beret. He's no hippie. In "Billy Jack" he defends a non-public school, a charter school, if you will, from a rapist. It's enough to make Margaret Spellings cream in her pants.

You're calling an ex-marine who stops a nuclear plant from being built on a fault line a dirty fuckin' hippie? Shit, I think the comment above hit the nail on the head. It pisses you off to see an Indian hitting white guys.

Oh for crying out loud Anon 11:07! Is alledged racism your favorite axe to grind? Have you made up your mind that all conservatives are racist, bigot, sexist, homophobes? If so then you must also think that all liberals are vegetarian, athiest, druggie, communists who hate America and sympathize with tin-pot dictators.

However if you would still like to apply your "they're all racist" stereotype then feel free. You're wrong but it's your opinion.

Just think about how sensative an caring the liberals are when you apply your stereotype. Like this for example:
"Carla Blanchard Dartez, used a racial insult [1] when speaking with the local NAACP president"
-WDSU channel 6, New Orleans.

Blanchard is a Democrat state representative and she called the NAACP president "Buckwheat".

This was reported Nov 12, 2007. Didn't know she was a Democrat? Of course you didn't. Racism isn't news if there's a "D" by your name. It's three weeks wall-to-wall coverage on all news networks if a Republican does something as bone-headed as this.

Still want to apply your silly stereotypes?

It's really funny that one of the comments sees Billy Jack as a socialist, or a flower power liberal. More than anything, Billy Jack was a moralist.

Billy Jack would have gotten along just fine with Harry Callahan and Paul Kersey. Any 70's film buff knows that to be true.

Billy Jack... Harry Callahan... Paul Kersey

There is no difference between these three. They are all moralists. Dirty Harry would have defended the Freedom School from a rapist, and Billy Jack would have thrown his badge in San Francisco Bay out of his disgust with the Police Dept. hierarchy.

If Blanchard wasn't a Democrat, Fox News would have offered her a slot in their primetime schedule by now!

Hee hee -- "Billy Jack is a socialist hippie." You deranged people are far out, man.

While the assessment that the character of Billy Jack being a moralist has some validity to it, Billy Jack and Trial of Billy Jack are loaded with socio-political stereotypes and archetypes to the point of absurdity.
By the way, anon, you misrepresented the plot of Billy Jack. He was not protecting the "school" (it was a commune calling itself a school) from a rapist. He killed a rapist out of vengance. No problem with that, but there was only one rape in the movie and one attempted one.
The movie revolved around stereotypical rich man, who was stereotypically above the law with most of town around his little finger (another stereotype) who was slipping onto reservation to slaughter mustangs.
So Billy wasn't playing the when-will-the-rapist-strike-again as your defense of the movie suggested.

jrob,

Of course Billy Jack flicks are loaded with stereotypes, as are any of the other action-figure moralist movies of the 70's. The Dirty Harry genre became nothing more than a cartoon, as did Death Wish. My point is that some posters here don't seem to understand that the protagonists in these films share the same mindset. You could substitute or interchange the main characters in these movies and not lose much as to motivation. Harry Callahan defending a commune? Why not, as he still gets to blow away bad guys... and Billy Jack as a cop? Not so far fetched, since he was a Green Beret and the Kung Fu cop angle is neat tie in. All of that is what makes PJ's post sort of lame. Everything he admires about Harry Callahan is right there in Billy Jack, but he only sees the surrounding stereotypes.

In the Canon of PJ and his acolytes, freaking Bo and Luke Duke would be commie socialists victimizing that poor capitalist Boss Hogg.

I love dropping by this site to see how they live on the other side of the looking glass. PJ himself may not be the least bit funny* (hence the loss in the Weblog Awards), but the comments from his supporters are comedy gold.

* Although he may be "funnie," which appears to be the humor equivalent of "chocolatey."

I remember the Billy Jack movies and I remember that it was the unending stereotypes and bad acting that made the movies so dreadful. The Billy Jack character may have started out as an attempt to bring another hero type to the big screen, but yet another 70's rendition of "white man is the enemy" social "message" was mixed into the plot and this changed the movie to the point that Billy Jack wasn't a someone seeking revenge for a rape, he was an Native American Avenger for all the injustices that white man has caused in the world.

The fact that the plots took place on a commune (Remember, "Freedom School" was being "unfairly" closed down by the Big Bad Government in the second movie) should point out the real message of the movies: White America and Capitalism is the true enemy. Billy Jack was a Green Beret trained by the Government to fight and kill for the Capitalist Society that inflicts some much death and destruction in the world. See how he rejects his past and fights for the little people who are viciously attacked just for trying to create a just society! Billy Jack is a True American Hero who fights injustice and only wants to help the little people! Long Live Billy Jack!

I walked out of the second move about half way through because I realized that the plot could be summed up in one word: Boring!

Nothing is more beloved to the Left than a heroic military man, who turns on everything the military and America stands for.

Indeed, it's the only kind of soldier they'll tolerate.
